JOHANNESBURG – BIDVEST Wits and Supersport United have made their title intentions known to rivals in the Absa Premiership while newbies Cape Town City will give the old boys a good run for their money.
Champions Mamelodi Sundowns and perennial contenders Kaizer Chiefs are still in with a shout.
That is if the resumption of the Premiership is anything to go by.
The second half of the season got off to a bang following a break of almost two months with Wits and Supersport particularly impressive.
Wits demolished visiting Ajax Cape Town 5-0 at the Bidvest Stadium on Tuesday to move top of the 16 team log on 28 points but they would relinquish the leadership a day later after Supersport scored five of their own in a convincing second half display at home against Golden Arrows. Arrows scored twice.
Elsewhere, newcomers Cape Town City continued their fairytale campaign with a 3-0 win over fellow newboys Highlands Park to jointly lead the standings with Supersport and Wits.
City are third owing to an inferior goal difference.
Chiefs started where they left off in the first half of season with a 3-1 win over Free State Stars in Soweto while Sundowns labored to 1-0 success away to Bloemfontein Celtic.
Chippa United claimed a last-gasp 2-1 win against Baroka FC in Port Elizabeth to worsen the bottom-placed side’s woes.
Polokwane City and Maritzburg United played to a 1-1 draw.
Orlando Pirates and Platinum Stars showed festive season hangover and rust in goalless draw in Rustenburg.
