Fatal Zimbabwe bus accident kill 30 passengers

MVUMA, (CAJ News) – AT least 30 passengers were killed on Thursday (yesterday) when a South Africa-bound bus was involved in an accident with a haulage truck.

The horrific crash occurred in Mvuma, over 200 kilometres south-east of the capital Harare when the trick sideswiped the bus, which later caught fire and killed the passengers on the spot.

Most of the victims, mainly women, were burnt beyond recognition while 30 managed to escape the blazing bus through emergency windows.

Survivors with various degrees of injuries were rushed to the nearby Driefontein Mission District Hospital located 100km north of the provincial capital of Masvingo.

Critically injured victims have been hospitalised 20 kilometres from the scene at Mvuma General Hospital.

A witness, Netsayi Muchineyi, said the truck driver could be to blame for the carnage.

“I suspect the haulage truck might have misjudged the distance between his cargo haulage truck and the space with the oncoming bus, resulting in the sideswiping,” she said.

A police constable, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media, said, bad records could be to blame.

“Extra caution is required when driving along these roads,” he said.

Most Zimbabwean roads are in a bad state owing to failure by government to maintain them.

A high number of accidents are recorded in the route to South Africa where hundreds travel daily to buy wares or seek refuge. The route is also a regional trade gateway.
