Fresh fears of tribal clashes grip Nigeria

From EMEKA OKONKWO in Abuja, Nigeria,
ABUJA, (CAJ News) – NIGERIA’S intelligence agency has warned perpetrators of hate speech after yet another group emerged with threats against certain tribes to vacate some regions in the country.
The so-called Niger Delta Watchdogs has threatened all northerners to leave the restive Niger Delta region in the south.Only recently, youths from the north demanded Igbos leave the region.
Meanwhile, another group alleged unearthing a site of massacre of Igbo ethnic group by northern youths. This has been disputed by the authorities.
Breaking its silence, the Department of State Services (DSS) said it had watched with the trend “keen interest.”It blamed “desperate” and “mischievous” elements bent on “steering the ship of our nationhood to calamity and irretrievable destruction.”
“Those involved in these misleading and despicable acts have since been warned to desist from anything capable of causing disaffection and stoking nationwide tensions,” said Tony Opuiyo, DSS spokesman.
Opuiyo said DSS strongly condemned the call for relocation of anyone to places against their wishes.“Such relocation order is not only illegal, but it is strongly viewed to be against the spirit of our Constitution which allows for freedoms of movement and association among others.”
Opuiyo advised citizens to disregard persuasions by “tribal jingoists” to turn Nigeria to “a theatre of the absurd and bloodletting.”“It is time for us, Nigerians, to show our humanness and patriotism which have been our defining strength as one united indivisible nation.”
