Kenya emerges a democratic example as poll is annulled

From MARIA MACHARIA in Nairobi, Kenya
NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – HEADS of Mission in Kenya have hailed the East African country as a model of democracy in the world following the annulment of the recent presidential results by the Supreme Court.
On Friday, the court invalidated the exercise after the opposition sought legal recourse, claiming vote rigging.
Opposition leader Raila Odinga queried the elections was rigged in favour of incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta.
Envoys, mostly from Europe and the United States, in Kenya said the decision was an “important moment for Kenya.”
“The Court’s independent review has demonstrated Kenya’s resilient democracy and commitment to the rule of law,” the heads of mission stated.
They hailed the Kenyan people for showing patience and confidence as the legal case ran its course.
Kenya’s electoral institutions must now begin preparing for a new presidential poll later this year, the envoys pointed out, urging everyone to work to make it free, fair, credible, and peaceful.
“We have trust in the ability of Kenya and its citizens to do so.”
In conclusion, the heads of mission lauded the dominance of democracy.
“At this historic time, we stand with all Kenyans as they support and reaffirm their democracy, which is an example for Africa and the world.”
