Midweek duels herald Absa Premiership festive break

JOHANNESBURG – WITH Mamelodi Sundowns assured of ending the first half of the season atop the standings, the race to occupy second spot during the festive season recess is intensifying.

Two league matches which have a bearing on the outlook of the leadership of the 16-team log are scheduled for this week.

Sundowns would be looking like to extend their lead when they host Cape Town City Football Club at Loftus Versfeld on Tuesday.

Bubbling with confidence following their 4-1 demolition of visiting Bloemfontein Celtic at the same venue this past weekend, a win will stretch Downs’ lead by nine points.

However, City can leap from fourth to second if they collect maximum points against the leaders. They would overtake second-placed Kaizer Chiefs, who have 22 points.

Sundowns will again depend on the scoring prowess of Percy Tau, Themba Zwane and Khama Billiat to enhance their lead.

The Brazilians lead the table with 28 points from 13 matches while fourth placed Cape Town City, who beat AmaZulu 1-0 at Cape Town Stadium at the weekend, are on 21 points from 13 games.

In the other encounter, Celtic will also be eyeing second spot when they host off-form Supersport United at Dr Molemela Stadium on Wednesday.

Celtic are seventh with 19 points from 13 games, but might find themselves on second if they win with a margin of four goals and City lose to Sundowns.

They will be fancying their chances against a visiting Supersport side that is yet to recover from the disappointment of missing out a continental title last month and sit 11th on the log.

Supersport, who have lost two league matches on the trot, are 11th on 15 points from nine games.

The two matches in Tshwane and Free State would see the league take a festive break until early January.
